The year we opened, the President came to town.
On November 17, 1961, President Kennedy and Vice President Johnson stood in the Thunderbird Room of the Westward Ho and toasted Carl Hayden’s fifty years in Congress. Phoenix was a town of about 440,000 then, the Westward Ho had just given up its title as the tallest building in Arizona, and a new outfit called Concrete Coring Company was in its first year of business a few miles away. We have cut concrete at the Westward Ho more times than we can count since. Phoenix is 1.6 million people now, and we are still here, still cutting.
- 1961. Kennedy at the Westward Ho. Concrete Coring Company opens for business.
- 1990. The Deck Park tunnel carries I-10 under downtown. Phoenix started pouring concrete on a scale it never had.
- 1998. The ballpark opens with a roof that rolls back. We have run a wall saw inside it and a slab saw on the entry ramp since. See the jobs.
- 2008. Light rail runs down Central. Every year since, more of the city is concrete, and more of it needs cutting.

Our truck parked under the scoreboard at Chase Field, and inside, a wall saw on the track cutting an opening through a block wall with the room sheeted off in plastic. Ballpark work happens between homestands and mostly at night, in finished spaces that have to look untouched when the gates open. That is the kind of job we get called for downtown.

The same ballpark, a different saw. This is the ramp where the trucks and equipment roll into Chase Field, and the slab needed cutting. Walk-behind saw on the line, a man on the slurry vac right behind it, cones out, truck backed up in the tunnel. Wet cut, cleaned up as we went, and the ramp was open again when we left.
Phoenix is where we started and where most of our trucks still spend the day. High-rise decks downtown, hospital work in Midtown, tilt-ups in Deer Valley, the Sky Harbor cargo ramps, and the block walls and pool decks in every neighborhood from Arcadia to Laveen. Why Valley concrete is different.
The aggregate in Phoenix concrete comes out of the Salt and Agua Fria river beds, and that river rock is some of the hardest in the country.
